MEET GINA WALDMAN

Tell us about the day your son was born.

The day Leo was born was really stressful.  I had an emergency cesarian and Leo was born 2 months prematurely. Despite this, he came home with me after just 4 days in the hospital which is unheard of for an early premature baby. He was really strong. I also had issues with my kidneys and was told that I could not carry a child so he's my miracle boy.

His personality...

Leo's personality is strong willed and fun. Everything is a game and he loves to have fun and go on adventures.

Work/life balance advice.

When I gave birth I was a fashion designer. I had the label Two together with my sister. When I had Leo I left the business and started freelancing as a interior stylist, artist and product designer. At the moment I am collaborating with Colin Levin who owns Geppettos World. We are co-designing a range of kids play equipment that can double as interior decor. I am very flexible in my job and really am motivated to work at my own pace. I love to work on projects and at the moment I am working mostly full time, but then there are periods that I work less. I have an amazing support system and everyone takes turns looking after Leo.

Adjusting to motherhood has been …

Something that just gets better and better every day.

How have you and your partner split the parenting responsibilities?

My partner Michael owns his own digital media company called The Content Bar. He is also somewhat flexible in his work and loves hanging out with Leo. He takes him on lots of adventures- whether it is on a bike ride or park. I  sometimes wonder who has more fun on the outing. He also does most of the cooking.

How would you describe your parenting style?

I think we are relaxed parents. All a child needs is love and security. When Leo was a baby I was not buying all the gadgets and gizmos that everyone says a new parent needs. The idea of the baby monitor would make me neurotic. Leo has mostly slept in our room and I love having him close by.

How would you describe your partners parenting style?

Mic fathers from the gut. He believes that feeding a child healthy food is one of the most important things one can do for them. We pump Leo with fruit every morning. He tries to expose Leo to new things all the time and speaks to him beautifully.

Whats been the most surprising aspect of motherhood?

That when I am away from my child for a short period of time, I am a better mother. I engage more and have so much energy to play with him.

How would you describe your home?

Our home is colorful and artistic. I have an absolute love for creating beautiful spaces. At the moment however we have grown out of our space and I feel like we are overflowing a bit. I need a studio that I can keep all my art stuff in and work out of and at the moment between Leos toys, Mics techie stuff and all my trinkets, we are a bit on the full side.

Your Parenting Philosophy?

Our parenting philosophy is to parent from instinct.

What do you want most for child?

I want him to be healthy and to continue to create adventures.

Parenting advice.

Don't ever lie to your child. The wall they bashed into is not "naughty," and the injection they are going to have will be a little sore. Trust is very important to a child and it is not necessary to lie to them.
