MEET BECCA KEMP POGIR

Tell us about the day your daughters were born.
Our daughters were born by c-section on 16 Novembers 2012.  They were born at almost 35 weeks at Sandton Medi- Clinic.  I had tried to keep the twins in as long as possible but by Friday 16 November Olivia was ready to come out!  We all went home 3 days later and there were luckily no complications even though they were small babies.  I was just so ready to be done being pregnant that I couldn’t wait to get them out!  The last few weeks of pregnancy were very challenging as carrying 2 babies is quite a challenge.

Olivia & Daniella's personality

Olivia was born first and from the beginning has always been very active.  She is constantly on the go and looking around at everything.  She enjoys going out and about.  Her sister Daniella is much more relaxed and enjoys just sitting and playing on the floor with her toys.  Both girls enjoy music and now at 8 months are beginning to interact with each other much more frequently.  The girls have already been to the USA and are about to go to Europe so they have been quite a few places.  They love swinging outside, going on walks and just relaxing at home listening to stories.

Work/life balance.

Currently I am a stay at home mom, which is helpful as we travel overseas almost every few months.  I enjoy being at home with the girls and we are busy going to baby and mom classes and meeting with other twin friends too throughout the week.  I am very involved in charity work and I am currently working on my NGO called the Hakuna Matata House, which is a home for abandoned babies.  It is not yet opened but hopefully will be up and running in the next year or two.

Adjusting to motherhood has been …

Amazing… . I love every minute and feel so blessed to have twins.  Thankfully I have always had a lot of energy so I can cope with little sleep if I need to.  I also have my wonderful husband, a loving and caring nanny as well as fantastic in laws down the road who are always willing to help.  I have learned that it is okay to accept help with the babies if I need it!

What has been the most surprising aspect of motherhood?

How fast it goes!  Time just flies and I just did not realize how fast babies grow up!

How would you describe your home?

Our home is a place that we try to make as happy, peaceful and comfortable for our children as possible.  We have a beautiful outdoor space which we try to make use of everyday.

What do you want most for daughters?

For them to be happy.

What is your parenting philosophy?

I take each day as it comes and have learned that what works for one child may not work for the other.  I try to be flexible and allow them to discover things on their own as much as possible.

Parenting advice.

I have received so much advice but I think at the end of the day different things work for different families and there is no one right way to parent.
